From initiative to infrastructure
Scientifically Speaking was founded in 2022 by Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham, a pharmacist, pharmaceutical scientist, and science communicator. The organisation builds on over a decade of work exploring how science can be communicated, experienced, and applied beyond traditional academic environments.
STEAM:ED Collective was an early science engagement initiative that brought scientific research into public spaces through art, design, and storytelling.
Through installations, murals, and public-facing work, it challenged traditional approaches to science communication and demonstrated that:
- Science can exist beyond institutional boundaries
- Creativity can unlock access to complex ideas
- Public engagement can be rigorous, accessible, and culturally relevant
This work established the foundation for Scientifically Speaking's approach to creative science translation and interdisciplinary engagement.
Monday Science was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as a science communication platform, exploring conversations across science, health, technology, creativity, design, environment, and lived experiences in STEM.
It has since evolved into a global STEM storytelling platform, positioning science as part of a wider human and societal context and creating space for interdisciplinary dialogue and meaningful engagement with scientific ideas.
Scientifically Speaking was established to transition from individual initiatives into a structured organisation capable of addressing systemic challenges. The focus shifted towards:
- Building programmes that scale
- Developing platforms that extend reach and influence
- Forming partnerships that enable systems-level impact
The organisation integrates expertise across scientific research, communication, policy, and cross-sector collaboration to deliver solutions that move science into practice.
Scientifically Speaking operates across the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 and Nigeria 🇳🇬, creating a model that combines global credibility with real-world implementation.
In 2024, Scientifically Speaking was formally incorporated in Nigeria to expand its work across workforce development, institutional collaboration, and life sciences ecosystem growth. This dual presence enables the organisation to:
- Design programmes within established research and institutional ecosystems
- Implement and adapt solutions within high-impact contexts
- Strengthen knowledge exchange across regions
Scientifically Speaking was created to address a fundamental gap: science does not fail at discovery. It often fails in how it moves.
The organisation focuses on improving how science moves across people, institutions, and society through structured programmes, platforms, and partnerships designed to translate knowledge into action.
